Guardian Sports Update

The rosters for the fall sports teams are finalised, and practices have already started. A new season means lots of changes- whether that be changes in the team, the coach, the uniforms, etc.

The varsity volleyball girl’s team is an exception to changes in the team. The team consists of the exact same players as last year, with no new additions or losses. Coach Heil has expressed great enthusiasm for the upcoming season with all the returning players on the team. Jessica Byun, a senior on the team, has stated the strengths and weaknesses of having the same team as the previous year. “I think the definite strengths are having team unity and teamwork. I feel close to the team, because I played with them before. However, since we are close, there are times when we goof off during practices. My goal this year as a senior is to make sure that we don’t goof off and to ensure that we give our 110% in every practice and game. I am most excited for the SFS games. Go Guardians!”.

The varsity volleyball boy’s team had their tryouts as well, resulting in a fresh new team. There are six new players and five returning players. Although some might doubt the success of a new team, captain Sam Lee claims that the players’ good attitudes will get them far. “The key to volleyball is dedicated and hard work, but also repetition and patience. With those developing skills, we will reach the top. We may be fresh, but we’re disciplined and motivated. And honestly, that’s all that matters.”

The boys’ tennis team, with new coach Mr. Bridgeman, is looking good. Captain Sungho Kim said, “The loss of Jun (last year senior) doesn’t seem too bad, because the freshmen and sophomores are really talented and hard working. The sophomores practiced all throughout summer, while the freshmen have a lot of confidence and potential. I’m excited for a new season with a new team, and I’m ready to lead the team with my best potential!”.

The cross country team has new head coaches- Ms. Powell and Mrs. Kosmack. The new coaches are new changes, along with the new runners. It is a brand new team this year, with most of the former runners gone, either to college or to a new destination. One of the captains, Sarah Chey, admit, “To be honest, it is tough having a team full of new people, including the coach. It is hard to get used to accept change. Everything this different, but we are all trying our best to work through our differences by voicing our opinions and trusting each other. We have a lot of work to do- a lot of training and getting to know each other. However, we have to be open to change and know that change isn’t always bad”. Although the cross country team is faced with a lot of changes, the runners are all eager to work together and become the best team that they can!

The fall sports teams are all enthusiastic and passionate about the new season. Although there are changes to be dealt with, the Guardians will work hard and overcome these differences to be the best that they can be. Make sure to watch the athletes’ games and track meets to show your support! Go Guardians!
