Award Descriptions

Every year, YISS gives out awards to recognize athletes who demonstrate not only outstanding athletic ability in their respective sports, but also team spirit, and embodiment of school values in their sports lives.

Team Awards

     MVP: The most valuable player on the team. This player contributes the most to the success of the team as a            whole.

     Coach’s Award: The player who is the floor leader of the team. This player leads by example with their attitude        and play.

     Guardian Award: The player who represents the school the best on and off the court/field. This player shows            the most pride in their school and team.

     Spirit Award: The player who best embodies the character of Christ on and off the court/field. This player is the      spiritual leader of the team.


Minor Awards

     Sport Pins: This goes to the athlete that is a first year varsity athlete in a given sport. Lettering is not                          prerequisite.

     Bar Pins: This goes to any varsity athlete in their 2nd year (and on) in a given sport, i.e. someone who plays              varsity volleyball would receive a volleyball pin their first year and an additional bar pin for each year after that.      Lettering is not prerequisite.

     Letters: Below are the lettering requirements for each varsity sport. If an athlete has already purchased a letter        jacket, they do not receive an additional letter.

          Cross Country: Finish in the top 10 at the JV Championship meet or finish in the top 7 in the final                                   team rankings or run faster than the specified times (girl first year-26:00/second year-25:05; boy first year-               20:45/second year-20:00) or run cross country for 3 consecutive years

          Tennis: Participation in 60% of the tennis matches as a starter. No exhibition/alternate matches will be                     counted. Friendly matches will be counted toward this requirement.

          Volleyball: Participation (entrance into the game) in 50% of the games (or sets) during the season. Friendly             matches, not scrimmages, will be counted toward this requirement.

          Basketball: Participation (entrance into the game) in 50% of the halves during the season. Friendly games,               not scrimmages, will be counted toward this requirement.

          Cheerleading: Participation at 75% of the games at which the cheerleaders are present. Friendly games will             be counted toward this requirement.

           Swimming: Score points in a conference or championship meet by placing 18th or higher. Participation in                  60% of the swim meets as a varsity swimmer. Friendly meets will not be counted toward this requirement.

          Soccer: Participation (entrance into the game) in 50% of the halves during the season. Friendly games, not               scrimmages, will be counted toward this requirement.

          Managing: Fulfills all managerial duties for the entire season for 2 consecutive years in the same sport.


Athlete of the Year

This award is the highest honor at YISS in the realm of athletics. This award goes to the athlete who is the embodiment of what it means to be a Guardian. All of the following criteria will be considered. Nominations will be submitted from coaches and then voted on. Coaches may choose to nominate athletes from other teams or not nominate anyone. Criteria (all must apply to the current year):

  • Sport(s) played
  • Role on the team(s)
  • Statistics
  • Leadership
  • Character on and off the curt/field
  • Varsity athlete
  • Discipline
  • Commitment to all team activities
