Yoyoyo. This is Coach Hale coming at you… with a post-tournament edition of the sports report.

The team with travel to Humphrey’s on May 7th for the KAIAC championships!

The Lady Guardians were able to enjoy being the hosts in this year’s KAIAC Tournament. After a dramatic and exhilarating end to the conference season, the Lady Guardians headed in as the #2 seed. The girls were able to dispatch a much improved Daegu team in the first round (4-0), with goals from Kyla, Soo, June, and Ga Yoon. The girls would then face a tough Osan team and would fall short 2-1 in a very tight match. Soo Lee leveled the game at 1-1 with an amazing solo finish, but it would not be enough to put the team through to the finals. With an opportunity to place at stake, the girls would face #1 seeded SFS, and stick together through a very tough game where neither team could find a way to score. After extra time, the game would go to…you guessed it…penalties! The girls would step up for our team and fight all the way through sudden death penalties (because you know…ending it in regulation just isn’t our style) and would end up losing 4-5. Again, our girls showed tremendous fight and determination through a very difficult ending to an incredible season.

All Conference: Hana Ikeda, Kyla Swanson, Suzy Kim, Jane Kim, and June Sohn

All Tournament: Jane Kim, Suzy Kim, and Soo Lee

Girls, we are so proud of you!

Watching you play this year brought us so much joy!

The boys’ tournament was held at SFS over the weekend. With a convincing win against Osan to start, 3-0, the boys looked ahead to conference champs, SFS. The guys lost, though, to a very good team 9-0. In the 3rd place match, the boys would face SAHS, looking to redeem their loss late in the season to this team. While Shutaro would put one of the board for YISS, the guys eventually lost 4-1.

All-Conference: Hogun Lee & Terry Lee

All-Tournament: Hannes Schwedhelm & Terry Lee

Friday (Day 1) the guardian girls swim team had a great showing; but despite 4 school records and over a dozen other personal best times they still found themselves in 3rd, trailing SAHS by only 2 points in a close battle for 2nd place.

The Boys Swim team also had a descent showing on Friday with numerous personal best times and 3 school records; however, they found themselves in a solid 4th position trailing KIS by over 30pts for 3rd place.

Saturday (Day 2), our Guardian swimmers could have been content to hold on to their very respectable 3rd and 4th places. But senior captains Abby Bacon, Daniel Noh, and Edward Cho had different plans for the last varsity meet of their career! The Girls team flew by SAHS in the point standings finishing 2nd overall and tying our school’s highest finish ever. The boys team was still trailing KIS by 16pts with only 2 events remaining, a seemingly impossible task… but the impossible was made possible with huge swims from all of our boys in the relays erasing the deficit and beating KIS by 1.5 points!!

Special congratulations to Jiyu Shin, earning All-Tournament honors by placing 2nd in the 50 breast, 2nd in the 50 free, and 3rd in the 100 breast. This was the top individual performance in YISSTORY.

The following individuals also made YISSTORY by setting individual and/or relay school records:

Abby Bacon

Jiyu Shin

Rebecca Kim

Yoona Choi

Jeri Kim

Edward Cho

Edward Park

Danny Kim

Daniel Noh

Congrats to all the swimmers on their well earned best times and hard fought victories!

Great job Guardians! This has been Coach Hale…and…I’m…OUT.
